This book was made by hand, using the technique of mokuhanga, sumi ink, and Japanese paper- I love the idea of using the oldest printing process in the world to create an idea of the future. The future makes me think of infinity, so I created symbols which represent the idea of the future as being eternal. Of course, we can’t visualize eternity, so our focus on that impossible concept is illusionistic- we can only live in the present moment.

“Kaunas Summer Diary”

Kaunas Summer Diary is a compilation of anecdotes and experiences of Julia Nascimento's first time in Kaunas, Lithuania. It explores the city's similarities with the author's home town, a complex history of oppression and occupation, and an incredibly rich cultural life. Printed and published by Hands on Press.

“Living Nowhere”

Living Nowhere tells the story of an immigrant couple that, after living in the two largest cities of Sweden, decide to move to the countryside for the first time in their lives during a pandemic. There, they find not only the different lifestyle of a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, but also new neighbours, beautiful landscapes and the smell of manure. The comic contents are anecdotes collected since the beginning of 2021 and it deals with the themes of isolation, cultural clash, and nature.

In my youth, there was a paper toy that children could fold into myriad shapes. The memory of this toy resurfaces as I fold my landscape prints, recalling how it once transported me into a moment of serene beauty.

“Position and Gaze”

I was inspired to create “Position and Gaze” by an artist-in-residence exhibition I had participated in previously. For this work, I made two wooden tables of varying heights, placed vegetables and everyday objects on them, and photographed the results. While creating this work, I thought about highlighting how any given object’s existence is positioned in relation to other objects and turning the observer’s gaze toward that truth. The two tables even look like three-dimensional frames, functioning continuously within the work as a kind of defined value.
