About the participating Art Byte Critique artists
Art Byte Critique artists are excited to be exhibiting new and recent book works for Bristol Art Book Event 2022. http://www.bookarts.uwe.ac.uk/babe2022/
This is the first year that we have participated in this event. Here follows a short introduction into what we are showing.
Mariko Jesse is sharing a total of five small folding books and zines at Bristol this year. Using mokuhanga - a water-based printmaking method - and letterpress printing, Jesse’s books and zines describe twilight, landscapes, travelling, Paris, night gardens, and beetles. https://marikojesse.com/printmaking
Yuko Kamei is showing three handmade books inspired by geological elements. The Great Stillness is a photographic series which began with thoughts on what lies beneath paved city surfaces. Works of Heat is a photographic series inspired by the process in which heat energy forms the Earth. And finally Natural Occurrence is inspired by earth elements exposed at volcanic sites. http://yuccak.net
Misako Oba presents two kinds of hand-crafted artist books from her Beyond Time and Space series. One is entitled Cry for LOVE with a 2022 version of unique encaustic covers. The other Beyond Time Waka Poem are unique Leporello leaflets made with Japanese Washi paper coated entirely with encaustic as monotype. This can be opened from every angle. Both books incorporate ancient Japanese poems with her modern English translation. The zine includes 5–7–5-7-7 syllables English poem as well. https://misakooba.com/
Louise Rouse is showing two books at the event this year that reflect the artist’s recent research. In the past, Rouse has produced concertina books that employ the technique of frottage to convey the many textures of Tokyo neighbourhoods. For this year’s event she is showing a practical guide for post-graduate study and another book that compiles a feature that internet search engines reply upon; online reviews and ratings. https://www.louiserouse.com
Yiru Sun is presenting a small, brightly coloured book based on her photographic series Rose-Tinted Glasses. Using a mixture of abstract and layered still-life imagery, Sun’s intimate artist book captures vivid subjects beneath cellophane wrappers. https://www.dorisun.com
Nick West is exhibiting three works from his ongoing series Books From Things. Reimagining the book form in alternative materials, the artist creates one-of-a-kind sculptures from readily available commodities. Working modularly, he uses the technique of assemblage to build up pages from physical constituents. For BABE 2022, West is showing three books from this series. https://www.nickwest.work
Nick will also be giving a short talk in the collections corner at Library, level 1 of B block (above SU café bar) at 12:30 on Saturday 23rd April.
